Russia - IKAR projects sugar production at 6.5 million tons

Russia's sugar production may rise to 6.5 million metric tons in 2023-24 from 6.2 million last season, according to agriculture consultancy IKAR.

IKAR said that the increase could be even bigger as overall data on sugar beet root growth is good almost everywhere, although a bit weak in terms of sugar content.

The area sown with sugar beet this year is 1,063,400 ha, 3.5% more year-on-year and even 1.6% bigger than initial data after the end of sowing. The biggest increase in area was in the south.

The company also reported that around 2.373 million metric tons of sugar beet were harvested by August 22, up from 1.542 million in the same period last year. Harvested area was up at 47,900 ha from 31,500 a year ago and the beet yield was slightly higher at 49.51 tons per ha from 49.05.

Beet sugar output totaled 250,000 metric tons as of August 21, against 163,000 a year ago.
