Sanctions target Russian beet pulp

The sixth sanctions package passed by the EU following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine included a ban on the import of crop residue, which includes sugar beet pulp. Russia exported 84-88% of the 1.5 million mt of granulated beet pulp it produced in 2021/22, and mills might struggle to find enough storage as a result of the ban, an expert at IKAR said. Exports to Asian and African nations could rise, along with domestic consumption, he noted.
