Russian growers could reduce their beet area in 2021

11 февраля 2021 года

The ministry of agriculture targets a beet area of 1.06 million ha in 2021, up 14.4% on year and enough for a sugar output of 6 million mt which should ensure stable prices. However, with the current price of sugar fixed, the production of beet is not profitable for most independent farmers who might switch to other crops like corn or sunflower, an expert at IKAR mentioned. He suggested that area will depend on when the government removes the cap on prices, as he noted that growers usually start planting in mid-March. A director at Prodimex said the firm planned to keep area stable next year although he conceded that some independent suppliers were looking to lower their area.
