Strong winds hit sugar beet sowing in Russia

Reuters, 01.06.15

Strong winds hit sugar beet sowing in several regions of Russia earlier this week, the Sugar Producers' Union said on Thursday, adding to pressure on this year's crop prospects. Russia usually imports raw sugar, mainly from Brazil and Thailand, to cover a part of its annual sugar consumption of around 5.6 million tonnes. Farmers in Russia's Central Federal District are currently assessing the affected area and some of them will consider whether to resow in some places, the Union said on its website www.rossahar.ru.

Earlier this week the Union said that up to 90,000 hectares could be hit out of a total 560,000 hectares in the Central Federal District. As of May 20, Russia had sown 98 percent of the planned area for sugar beet - some 983,100 hectares, up from 907,300 hectares at the same date a year ago.

The real affected area is likely to be smaller than the 90,000 hectare estimate, though still significant, said Evgeny Ivanov, a sugar analyst at Moscow-based agriculture consultancy IKAR. Next week, IKAR will probably cut Russia's sugar production forecast for this year from a previous estimate of 4.6 million to 4.8 million tonnes, Ivanov added. Russia produced 4.4 million tonnes of sugar in the previous year.
