The controversy between Canada and China regarding the arrest of the financial director of telecom giant Huawei means that Canada can no longer sell rapeseed to the Chinese.

That is a sensitive blow, as China absorbs nearly half of Canadian rapeseed exports. It may also have an impact on wheat prices in the long run, as it is already clear that Canada's rapeseed area will shrink in favor of other crops, including summer wheat.

Russian export prices adjusted downwards

Wheat prices on the physical market are somewhat floating up and down. The market is waiting for a tender from Algeria for wheat, for which France, according to agency Agritel, has to compete against Argentina. Russian wheat export prices have been adjusted downwards, reports the Russian news agency IKAR. This after a fall in quotations in Chicago, influenced by news about large American stocks of soy and corn. Russian wheat exports have been slowed down for a time due to high domestic prices and shrinking available volume. The Russian government is currently using more stocks for sale. The winter grains in Ukraine are in much better condition than last year. The country is struggling with logistical problems, there are not enough trains available.

Weather conditions closely monitored

The weather conditions worldwide are closely monitored on the wheat market. According to a recent survey by the US agricultural ministry USDA, 56% of winter wheat is in good shape. That was only 32% last year around this time. People worry more about summer wheat. In the north of the US, flooding is on the rise and disrupting the sowing of wheat, while drought is causing problems in Europe.
