Russia- Nation will not require sugar imports in CY 2018-19: IKAR, 13.11.18

Despite an expected decrease in Russian sugar production in the 2018-19 season, imports of raw sugar will not be required to maintain the national supply, according to Yevgeny Ivanov of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR).

Output is expected to fall to 5.5 million-5.8 million mt for the 2018-19 season, down from 6.64 million mt in the previous season. Annual Russian sugar demand is estimated at 6 million-6.1 million mt/year, according to the organization.

The Russian crop year runs from August to September.

The decline in production is attributed to a reduction of planted area, which has been estimated at 1.109 million hectares, or 6% lower than 2017-18 levels, according to the report.

Although sugar beet yields had fallen 13% from the year-ago period as of November 7, beet sugar content has risen 5% from last year's levels, according to the organization.

Ivanov said that despite the production deficit, the country will be able to meet its needs by tapping into the sugar reserves built up over the past three years, as well as using 250,000-300,000 mt of sugar imported from Belarus to meet demand.

Russian sugar reserves were estimated at upwards of 250,000 mt at the beginning of the season, while imports from Belarus have been estimated between 250,000-300,000 mt/year, according to the organization.
