Russia – Production of starch syrups, beet yields and imports, 10.07.17

The production of starch molasses, glucose-fructose and other syrups in the Russian Federation according to IKAR estimates can set an absolute record in 2017 - to come close to the level of 0.5 million tons. According to Rosstat for January-May 2017, production in this group of syrups exceeded 268 thousand tons, including. Starch molasses 202 thousand tons (+ 7% against the level of the previous year). Low relative domestic prices for wheat and corn and the continuing growth of industrial consumption in the sugar and syrup group form the long-term investment attractiveness of the Russian starch industry. Especially in the production of syrups and molasses in regions close to industrial consumption centres.

Russia's first sugar beet test for the 2017/18 crop, conducted on July 1, showed an average root weight of only 92 grams, down sharply from 125 a year ago and a five-year average of 125.4 grams and the number of beets per ha fell to 96,000. On the other end, Russian raw sugar imports decreased to 6,200 tonnes in the first five months of 2017 from 188,800 in the same period a year ago, customs data showed.
