TABLE-Russian raw sugar imports fall in September

21 ноября 2011 года

MOSCOW, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Russia raw sugar imports plummeted to 700 tonnes in September from 90,400 tonnes in August and 70,800 tonnes in July following an increase in import tariffs and a high domestic beet sugar crop, customs data showed on Wednesday.

Russia increased its import tariff on raw sugar to $85 per tonne in July from $50 in June.

Russia officially expects to produce a record 5 million tonnes of beet sugar this season, although analysts' output estimates are lower due to a succession of frosts and thaws, which might cause high losses of beet stored in the open air.

"Output of sugar may rise above 4.5 million tonnes (only) provided favourable weather conditions and coordinated work of sugar refineries," the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) said in a monthly sugar review on Wednesday.

First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov has said that Russia, formerly a major sugar buyer, may need no more imported sugar until the end of the year.

The Federal Customs Service data showed imports of tea, coffee and cocoa rose in the period from January to the end of September. It provided the following figures:
