This is due to a 30 percent rise in the area to be sown with sugar beets, the Russian Sugar Producers' Union said in a statement. Russia, the world's third-largest sugar buyer, refines over a half of the sugar it consumes from domestic beets and the rest from imported raws. The previous beet sugar output record was set in 2008/09, when the country refined 3.5 million tonnes of beet sugar. In 2009/10 beet sugar output fell 3.2 million tonnes as a result of a decline in the sowing area to 822,700 hectares. Under a three-year programme for Russia's beet sugar sector, approved by the Agriculture Ministry, the country is expected to produce 3.73 million tonnes of beet sugar in 2010. The Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) analytical centre expects Russia to refine 4.2 million tonnes of sugar from domestic beets. Source: Reuters | #sugar | Comments: 0 Views: 62
