Russia – Sugar beet showing encouraging signs

26 июля 2017 года

Cereals of sugar beet, which have lagged behind in their development due to cold weather and rains in April-June, are now actively catching up with the lag behind, according to the Institute of Agrarian Market Studies ( IKAR ). As the leading expert of IKAR Eugene Ivanov told Interfax, at present the beet crops are in excellent condition, this was shown by field inspections conducted by the Institute's specialists. "Warm weather and good moisture reserves in the soil contribute to the development of plants," he said.

According to him, the recent reports that due to the reduction in the mass of the Russian root this year will reduce the production of sugar beet, exaggerate the risks. "Because of the weather, anything can happen, but a beet wake can be done early," the expert said. "In favorable weather, it is possible to say with a high probability that the beet will" catch up "with the records of the past, the record year by weight of the root, Perhaps, on sugar content, "he said.

Eugene Ivanov said that the sugar content of beet is still 11.88% against 13.07% a year earlier. But in the Krasnodar Territory it is already higher than last year's - 14.94% against 14.58% as of July 21, 2016. According to IKAR on July 21, the root weight was 235 grams compared to 268 grams for the same date last year. And the lag is rapidly declining: if, according to the data for July 11, it was 41 grams, then by July 21 it was reduced to 33 grams. "But the weight of the tops has already outstripped the indicator of the previous year and is 344 grams against 303 grams," Eugene Ivanov said. "The beet has a good leaf machine, which in the remaining time before harvesting will allow you to gain weight and sugariness."

At the same time, the expert noted that in recent years the practice of "anomalously early" start of sugar beet harvesting was formed in the Russian Federation, when root crops "did not gain" weight and sugar. This year, he said, there is an opportunity to shift the beginning of harvesting a little and at the expense of it to receive a higher yield. According to his forecast, in the central regions cleaning can begin about a week later than usual. Eugene Ivanov also said that, according to updated data of Rosstat, the acreage under sugar beet this year amounted to 1.199 million hectares in comparison with the preliminary data of 1.190 million hectares. This is 8% more than last year (1.11 million hectares). IKAR still retains the earlier forecast that the production of sugar beet sugar in 2017 will be 6 million tonnes. This is close to the indicator of the previous year - 6.2 million tonnes, taking into account the processed molasses.
