Russian grain prices fall following world trend

16 октября 2008 года

MOSCOW, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Russian grain prices kept falling last week, following international prices and forcing exporters, who had accumulated significant stocks, to lower domestic bid prices, analysts said.

Standard wheat Novorossiisk FOB November delivery contracts traded at $225 per tonne, the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) said. It said third-grade milling wheat prices declined by 47 roubles to 5,910 roubles ($228.3) per tonne in southern Russia, fourth-grade by 168 roubles to 4,885 roubles and fifth grade feed wheat by 142 roubles to 3,948 roubles.

SovEcon agricultural analysts said average third-grade wheat prices lost 250 roubles per tonne, fourth-grade wheat lost 225 roubles and feed wheat 75 roubles.

"We believe that the potential for further weakening of prices is far from exhausted," SovEcon said. "Therefore the holders of grain stocks, which follow the traditional tactics of keeping them as long as possible, are taking serious risks." Feed barley FOB November delivery contracts fell to $185 per tonne. Domestic feed barley prices in southern Russia lost 142 roubles to $3,690 roubles per tonne, IKAR said.

It said domestic ex-silo maize prices stayed at unusually low levels due to a shortage of drying and storage facilities. The Krasnodar price is estimated at $3,300 roubles per tonne, which makes export operations realistic.

SovEcon said the decline of maize prices slowed last week to 100 roubles per tonne from 400 roubles a week before.

IKAR said that, as of the end of September, Russia had exported a record high volume of grains, totalling 6.3 million tonnes and including more than 3.1 million in September.

Wheat exports accounted for 5.65 million tonnes since the start of the season.

Sunseed prices rose by 275 roubles per tonne on average as crushers raised bid prices, SovEcon said. IKAR said domestic sunseed purchase prices increased by 500 roubles to 9,500-9,700 roubles per tonne.

About a quarter of the planted area has been harvested with yields at 1.57 tonnes per hectare, 0.22 tonnes higher than at the same date a year ago, IKAR said.

It said crude sunoil price declined slightly to 25,100 roubles per tonne. Rapeseed oil was offered at 26,000 roubles per tonne and soybean oil at 23,000-25,000 roubles per tonne.

The strengthening of the dollar last week pushed white sugar prices to $565 per tonne from $587 in Krasnodar, IKAR said. Rouble-denominated white sugar prices remained unchanged.
