According to IKAR incredibly hot temperatures and absence of rains in South of Russia may cause decrease in corn yields by 25-35%. Early corn hybrids are in slightly better shape, while later hybrids did not develop ears. As the result projected corn output in South of Russia may decrease by 0.3 to 0.9 MMT. Despite the general increase in Russian planting areas by 0.87 MHA total Russian corn output may decrease from 3.2 to 2.6-3.2 MMT with higher probability of 2.7-2.8 MMT. The situation with sunseeds looks even worse, as super high temperatures in in the South cause the effect of “pollen sterility”, which does not allow form the ovary. According to the current IKAR’s estimate the yield decrease would be by 30-35% while output forecast is 5.4-5.6 MMT (2005 - 6,4 MMT).
