The average leaf weight also increased, rising to 185 grams from 174 grams in 2005 and 152 grams in 2004. Average plant density increased to 81,000 beets a hectare from 79,000 in 2005 and 2004, Soyuzrossakhar said. Russia is likely to increase its refined sugar output from domestically harvested beet to 2.95 million-3.00 million metric tons from 2.5 million tons in 2005, according to agrarian markets research institute IKAR. IKAR said there had been an 18% increase on the year in the beet planted area in Russia this year, especially in central black earth regions. Beet processing by sugar refineries this year will begin 1-4 weeks earlier than in the past, IKAR said. Refineries in North Caucasus are planning to begin processing in the first half of August, and refineries in Russia's other regions at the end of August/early September.
