Russia becomes second largest supplier of peas to India in 2024 after Canada

11 марта 2025 года

MOSCOW. March 11 (Interfax) - Russia supplied 896,800 tonnes of peas to India totaling $424.9 million in 2024, with Russia becoming the second largest supplier of peas to India's market after Canada, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry said.

Canada exported nearly 1.5 million tonnes of peas to Russia totaling $697.7 million, with Turkey entering the top three to export 230,300 tonnes to Russia totaling $112.3 million.

Russia exported 36,600 tonnes of peas to India totaling $12.8 million in December.

India imported 2.9 million tonnes of peas overall in 2024 versus 10.98 million tonnes in 2023. India has a duty-free regime to import peas until May 31, 2025.

Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) CEO Dmitry Rylko told Interfax that the duty on imported peas was rescinded in order to ease tension on the domestic market.

Rylko said that India is currently "far from the first buyer of Russian peas, as the main shipments go to Bangladesh and Turkey."

"However, deliveries to the Indian market may be in full swing in the coming 2025-2026 agricultural season [July-June], when new resources appear," Rylko said, noting that an increase in the area regarding peas is expected this year.

"Peas have shown good profitability; farmers are not disappointed in them. The incentive to grow them remains high," Rylko said.

Speaking about the current agricultural year that ends on June 30, 2025, Rylko said that exports from Russia could fall by over 50% to 1.5 million tonnes from 3.2 million tonnes in the 2023-2024 agricultural year owing to the decline in the pea harvest in 2024.

Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) data indicate that Russia's pea harvest declined to 3.8 million tonnes in 2024 from 4.7 million tonnes in 2023.
