Experts raised its forecast for grain harvest in Russia this year

Experts of the grain market amid improving weather conditions in several leading grain-producing regions of the Russian Federation continue to raise forecasts for grain harvest this year.

According to “SovEcon”, the June forecast has been increased by 2.3 million tons, to of 128.6 million tons. This is the second figure after the record harvest in 2017. A key factor is the improvement in the weather conditions in may and growth of the area under spring wheat. The main increase is expected in wheat, the projected harvest increased from 81.2 million tons to 82.7 million tonnes. “Rainfall in may stabilized and improved the conditions for yield formation of wheat in the Russian South. In the Central Chernozem and the Volga region conditions for the formation of the crop remain very favourable. Many regions in may received 150-200% of normal precipitation”, – explained in the message.

The new assessment “Sovekon” in the sowing area of spring wheat is 12.4 million hectares to 12 million hectares in may. The largest increase showed the square in the center of Russia. “Sovekon” has also increased its forecast of the corn crop by 1.5 million hectares to 14.8 million tons, the evaluation of the yield of barley is reduced by 0.1 million tons to 19.9 million tons. The Institute for agricultural market studies (IKAR) on Thursday also increased the forecast of wheat 75.6 million to 78 million tons. Evaluation of wheat exports in the new agricultural year (July 2020-June 2021) increased by 1 million tons to 35 million tons.

Previously, the forecast for wheat production increased and the company “Prozerno” – up to 77.4 million tons from 74 million tons. Estimate of gross collection is now 128,1 mln tons against 123,3 million tons in the previous forecast.

The USDA on Thursday released its June report that the wheat crop in Russia this year will amount to 77 million tons.
