Russia- CIS beet planting to fall 4%, sugar production by 3% in 2019: expert

25 марта 2019 года

CIS nations will cut sugar beet planted area by 4% and sugar production by 3% in 2019, Andrei Bodin, president of the Eurasian Sugar Association, said during the CIS Sugar Market Conference Friday.

Interfax reported Friday that the total beet planted area across the bloc will total some 1.521 million hectares, down from 1.587 million hectares in 2018.

Low global sugar pricing and oversupply have encouraged farmers to switch to more profitable crops.

"Today, grains have a substantial profitability, oilseeds are also in demand," Bodin said.

Ukraine is expected to make the largest reduction in beet area, down 40,000 hectares to 240,000 hectares in 2019. Russia will cut some 26,000 hectares to 1.1 million hectares. Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are expected to remain unchanged from last year.

Sugar production is expected to fall 3% in 2019, amounting to 8.855 million mt, versus 9.090 million mt in 2018. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova are all expected to see lower production.
