IKAR in Mass MediaRussia - Soyuzrossakhar lowers sugar production forecast due to rain22 декабря 2017 года Warm and rainy weather in some regions has brought the transportation of sugar beets from the fields to the factories to a halt, which leads to unstable operations at the factories, according to the Russian Sugar Producers Union (Soyuzrossakhar). There are 54 factories still operational (down from 60 last year) while 19 have finished the campaign and two have temporarily stopped operations due to a lack of beet supply. The Union put this year's gross sugar beet production at 51.3 mln tonnes of which 43.2 mln have been delivered to the factories and some 7 mln are still stored in beet piles on the fields. The avearge sugar content was put at 14.27%, some 1.1 percentage points higher than last year. Taking into account predicted losses during storage, Soyuzrossakhar has lowered its sugar production forecast for the current season to 6.5 mln tonnes from 6.6 mln before. This would be still higher than last year's 6.2 mln tonnes. Soyuzrossakhar said Russia's sugar production amounted to 5.75 mln tonnes as of December 20, which is 500,000 tonnes more than on the same date last year. Local consultancy IKAR estimates that the 6 mln tonne threshold may be reached by December 31, nearly one month earlier than last year (January 29).
