Russian milling grain prices rise, feed grains fall

MOSCOW, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Russian milling grain prices rose last week on domestic and exporters' demand, while feed grain prices kept declining on a large crop, analysts said.

But the start of government purchases on Tuesday may support feed grain prices.

Third-grade milling wheat added 175 roubles ($7.21) per tonne, while lower fourth-grade wheat rose by 25 roubles per tonne, SovEcon agricultural analysts said.

The Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) said third-grade wheat rose by $11 per tonne to $244, fourth-grade rose by $1 to $215 per tonne, while feed wheat declined by $10 to $172, ex-silo in the south of Russia.

The domestic feed barley price declined to $151, it said.

The rise of milling wheat resulted from the end of the first sales wave in the south of the country, high demand from exporters fulfilling urgent contracts, and from domestic flour mills, which are replenishing their stocks, SovEcon said.

However, the rise of the fourth-grade wheat prices appears to be limited due to strong competition, it said. The latest indication of this was the rather low price of $305 per tonne C&A paid by Egypt last week for Russian-Ukrainian milling wheat.

Third-grade wheat prospects appear to be much better, as FOB export prices for U.S. HRW wheat, which is the closest competitor to Russian third-grade, are some $80 higher than those of SRW wheat, which competes with fourth-grade wheat.

The difference between the prices of the two Russian cereals is $29-$37, SovEcon said.

The government purchase interventions to start on Tuesday may support prices of feed grain, as prices in some regions have already fallen below those set by the government, it said.

IKAR estimated grain exports last week at 430,000 tonnes, which means that Russia had exported almost 1.5 million tonnes since the start of the 2008/09 season in July.

Crude sunoil prices fell last week by nearly 2,000 roubles per tonne and a further decline is possible, SovEcon said. Sunoil declined to 36-37 roubles per kilo, IKAR said.

New harvest forward sunseed purchase contracts have not yet been fixed yet due to cxonsiderable uncertainty about prices, IKAR said. Traders expect prices in the range of 7-10 roubles per kilo.

The current rapeseed cash market is not very active due to small volumes of unsold rapeseed. The purchase price ranges between 11 and 12.5 roubles per kilo. The crude rapeoil price has declined to 28-30 roubles per kilo, IKAR said.

Domestic white sugar prices, in the benchmark Krasnodar region have dropped significantly to $650 per tonne from $683 ex-factory, due to a stronger dollar and the start of the sugar beet harvest in the south of Russia and active raw sugar processing, IKAR said.
