Russian wheat prices fall on weaker rouble

MOSCOW - Russian wheat export prices fell last week due to the rouble weakening against the dollar by 3 percent, analysts said on Monday.

Black Sea prices for Russian wheat with 12.5 percent protein content were $193 per ton on a free-on-board (FOB) basis at the end of last week, down $1 from a week earlier, the Russianagriculture consultancy IKAR said.

Prices in the Azov Sea, via which Russia supplies wheat to Turkey, were down $3 at $162 per ton. The rouble fell last week due to weaker oil prices, which are trading at around seven-year lows on over supply.

SovEcon, another Moscow-based consultancy, said FOB wheat prices in the Black Sea were down $1.50 at $193 per ton.

Exporter activity is slowing down in Russia's southern regions ahead of New Year holidays and a seasonal decline in January supplies, SovEcon said.

It also said the agriculture ministry had bought 141,900 ton of grain on the domestic market to replenish state stocks last week.

Domestic prices for third-class wheat added 25 roubles to 10,925 roubles ($155) per ton in the European part of Russia, on an ex-works basis, according to SovEcon.

It also said average prices for sunflower seeds were up 350 roubles at 24,175 roubles per ton. Domestic sunflower oil prices jumped 1,425 roubles to 53,500 roubles per ton, while export prices were flat at $790 per ton.
